Today is such an important day in Canadian history, Canadian lives and Canadian hearts. Remembrance Day is a day to reflect upon and remember our fallen soldiers that gave their lives to make Canada the beautiful, safe and welcoming country it is today. It’s also a day to reflect on the the wives, husbands, parents, children, siblings and friends left behind while their loved ones went off to war.
There are few words that can describe the mixture of emotion one must feel when saying goodbye to a soldier, terrified of what might happen, proud of what they are standing for. During WW1 and WW2, many wartime couples rushed to marry before the soldiers were shipped off to war in fear of never seeing eachother again. Oftentimes these weddings took place the day of or before departure. I can’t even imagine what that must have felt like.
With that said, today we would like to honour our Canadian veterans and the memory of our fallen soldiers by sharing some vintage Canadian wedding photos of soldiers and their brides, sourced from The Memory Project. The Memory Project is “a nationwide bilingual project that connects Veterans and Canadian forces personnel with the opportunity to share their stories…The Memory Project has created a record of Canada’s participation in various global conflicts, including the Second World War and Korean War, through oral interviews, digitized artefacts, and memorabilia.” The Memory Project is generously funded by donations to Historica Canada. Thank you to the Canadian veterans and every man and woman who sacrificed in the past, and those soldiers who continue to sacrifice today so we can live strong and free. We honour you by sharing your stories so your memories can live on.
Lest we forget.
