Weddings have always been a social affair, the gathering of friends and family celebrating the marriage of loved ones. Recently however, weddings are becoming social in a whole new way with the rise of social media. Weddings are no longer strictly for guests, because with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube, anyone can get a glimpse of your big day.
Today’s bride is digitizing her wedding experience before, during and after the event. Weddings are now planned out on Pinterest, relationship statuses are broadcast to your online network, wedding videos are shared on Vimeo and Youtube, and pictures blasted across Instagram in real time.
This is presenting a whole new issue when it comes to etiquette, however, as there are still brides who would like to reserve the right to post their own professional photos as opposed to guests beating them to the punch with their own pictures uploaded to social media. On the other hand, 55% of brides create their own hashtag to gain access to as many pictures of the day as they can in real time. In fact, there has recently been a surge in custom wedding apps and websites that make wedding planning, photo sharing and wedding hashtags easier to manage (see here).
Regardless of where you fall opinion-wise when it comes to social media and weddings, the infographic below from The Knot and Mashable is an interesting read indicating where we’re at as a society when it comes to weddings and sharing formerly private moments with the world.
