The Importance of Wedding Insurance

It’s every bride’s worst nightmare. Your wedding day has arrived, your wedding party is dressed and ready to go and guests have started to arrive, when you get the call. Your venue has been shut down indefinitely. It’s scary to think but it happens. Most recently in Mississauga, ON when two wedding parties and their guests showed up to The Grand Metropolitan for their wedding only to find the doors chained shut.

When unforeseen circumstances occur, how can you protect yourself? With wedding insurance. Yes, it exists. With the rise in costs of weddings, more and more couples are opting to get covered for their big day. Before you dismiss the idea as a cash grab, think about it this way. – if you purchased a $25,000 car, would you want to protect that investment from damage?

A lot of unexpected events could arise that could prevent your wedding from happening. Beyond your venue closing unexpectedly, vendors could back out, the bride or groom could fall ill, your wedding gown could be damaged, extreme weather could cause damage or cause power outages. Wedding insurance can cover the cost of postponing and rescheduling or the money lost as a result. Insurance can also cover your wedding rings (not engagement, they typically require separate coverage) and wedding gifts in case of theft or damage. Beyond cancellation coverage, liability coverage is also important as it protects you from any accidents that may occur at your wedding – if you have an open bar, this is a must.

Some vendors and most venues will have their own insurance coverage so be sure to check with them before booking and ask to see a copy of their policy if that will make you more comfortable.

Lastly, make sure you shop around until you find a plan that you are happy with. Plans vary on the extent of coverage and cost. It’s important that you’re protected but that you are comfortable with what you’re protected against too. Keep your peace of mind on your wedding day, get covered!
