Summer Flower Feature – Part 2

Summer wedding season is in full swing here at Brightside Films, so what better to talk about this Friday than beautiful summer blooms? In case you missed it, earlier this week we showcased some top favourite summer wedding flowers (click here to catch up), today we will be doing part two!

To keep with tradition in our flower features (check out our spring posts here and here), let’s kick this post off with another fun wedding fact! Did you know that the origin of flowers girls scattering flower petals along the aisle was to lead the bride to a sweet, plentiful future? Do you think that means double the flower girls, double the riches? We wish!

You’d be hard pressed to find a bride anywhere who doesn’t associate Magnolias with the Southern US and the timeless film, Steel Magnolias. The bloom is a favourite among traditional brides as their large (typically white) petals are elegant and classic. The flowers features as many as 10 petals and average 5 inches wide making them great for large arrangements and arbors. Magnolia leaves are also quite popular in weddings, especially lately as garland and greenery are becoming quite trendy.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are a classic pick for the rustic bride. They are perfectly suited to an outdoor or farm wedding. Their large open faced blooms feature bright yellow petals and a dark brown center. Sunflowers look great as an addition to a large centerpiece, clustered together with an assortment of wild flowers or on their own.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums (aka mums) are like the chocolate to cakes. They make everyone happy. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours, are very economical, have no scent so they pair well with other blooms, have one of the longest after-cut lives among flowers (up to 3 weeks!) and they can go hours without water. All this AND they’re beautiful. Have I sold you yet?

Calla Lillies

Calla lillies are among the most traditional wedding flowers, dating all the way back to the Victorian era. They are a streamlined flower, with long green stems and an asymmetrical bell-shaped bloom. Calla lillies love humidity so they’re a great flower for summer weddings in Ontario. They come in a variety of colours so will suit many different schemes. These blooms fare best with their stems kept long so if you choose this flower, choose a tall vase.

Gerbera

Another favourite with the rustic and DIY bride, the gerbera daisy is timeless but has been experiencing a recent resurgence thanks to brides loving the combination of daisies and mason jars. Gerberas are available in most colours making them well suited to a variety of weddings. This bloom is similar in look to a sunflower but significantly smaller so are at their best in smaller arrangements and bouquets.
